Why do black people pin money on their shirt when it's their birthday?

I've never in my life seen people pin money on their shirts until I started working at Applebee's. I don't get why they would pin money on their shirt, anyone could easily snatch that off, especially at Applebee's where one of our regulars is a homeless guy.

I'm white and I do the same!
Idk why...but that's what has happend since I was a kid. They even have special pins for it...do you live under a rock?
