Why did the Salem witchhunts and the Red Scare of the mid 20th century end? What's our current scare?

The witch hunts and the Communist menace ended because there were no witches or Communists, just as there were no WMDs. To control a people, split the communities (or social systems) in half and set one side against the other. That is how control of the population is effected.

The current scare is evident on every evening news broadcast, every day.
